Strategy

The Danish Meteorological Institute (DMI) seeks to contribute to a robust, safe and sustainable society.

For this reason, DMI can and will play an increasingly central role in decision support by providing valid data and research-based, expert advice in close cooperation with other actors across society. With the 2024–2028 strategy, DMI will continue to develop as a socially responsible public authority.

A society shaped by climate change calls for DMI’s open climate and meteorological data, our role as a climate science adviser, and our daily operational services with weather forecasts as key elements in the green transition.

Vision & mission

Vision
DMI equips society to meet the weather and climate of the future.

Mission
DMI delivers research-based knowledge and data on weather, water and climate in order to ensure safety and create the conditions for the green transition across the societies of the Realm.

Strategic focus: Climate science adviser

DMI will strengthen its role as a climate science adviser to the Realm and continue to deliver research-based knowledge, data and communication on climate change. In order to further support the green transition, climate adaptation and the management of weather dependency across society, DMI will develop its role as a climate science adviser within the framework of the National Centre for Climate Research (NCKF).

This includes high-quality applied research, among other things on developments in both Denmark and the Arctic, as well as increasingly visible advice and communication on climate change aimed at both citizens and decision-makers.

The goal is a weather- and climate-resilient Realm, where effective climate action and adaptation are based on solid knowledge and professional expertise.

Specifically, we will:

  • develop societally relevant research and advisory services on the physical changes in the climate and their consequences.
  • communicate more visibly about climate change to citizens, stakeholders, the government and other decision-makers, based on NCKF’s research, data from the Climate Atlas and other data sources, as well as active engagement as Denmark’s contact point to the UN’s Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC).
  • create additional societal value as a climate science adviser through new interdisciplinary partnerships and by making use of DMI’s expertise in developing countries.
  • lay the foundations for DMI to contribute to strengthening the Realm’s work on emission reductions, emissions inventories and the impacts of emissions.
Strategic focus: The weather and warnings of the future

DMI will establish itself as a weather science adviser in order to strengthen its role as the national warning authority for the benefit of the Realm.

When severe weather strikes, it can cost lives and have major economic consequences. With an increased focus on future weather and warning services, DMI supports citizens, the Armed Forces, emergency services, businesses, authorities and many other stakeholders across the Realm around the clock, helping them to be as well prepared as possible for extreme weather events.

DMI will deliver the weather-related knowledge and data that decision-makers trust and that underpin both public safety and the green transition of society.

Specifically, we will:

  • develop DMI’s role as a weather science adviser to the government
  • strengthen DMI’s authority role within meteorological and hydrological research and operations
  • meet society’s future needs for warnings through research-based development of new types of warnings across the Realm
  • further develop DMI’s communication of warnings in dialogue with users and stakeholders
  • strengthen DMI’s role in the Arctic as an adviser and provider of knowledge and data on weather, water and climate to Greenlandic society and the Armed Forces
  • release more weather and climate data to society
Strategic focus: Technology

DMI will continue to take a curious approach to new technological opportunities that support research, warning services and the communication of climate and meteorology for decision-making in society.

Rapid technological development plays an increasingly important and decisive role in modern meteorology and climate research. The exploration, selection and application of technology can help ensure the continued central role of meteorological institutes in modern, weather-dependent societies.

DMI will strengthen its ability to apply new, relevant technologies through more integrated solutions and skills development.

Specifically, we will:

  • curiously monitor technological developments in areas where we are not yet active
  • test selected new technologies and technological methods in collaboration with others
  • seek out and collaborate with external stakeholders within the green transition on the use of existing and new technologies
  • implement technologies that support wellbeing and a flexible workplace
  • position DMI as an attractive and relevant partner within technology
Strategic focus: DMI in the world

DMI is a global actor and will continue to expand its international cooperation and partnerships across the meteorological value chain.

Strong international collaboration within weather, water and climate strengthens the basis for improved weather forecasts, warnings of extreme weather and adaptation to climate change. This benefits both the global economy and the protection of the world’s most vulnerable populations.

The aim is to strengthen Denmark’s international position, including through policies of the World Meteorological Organization (WMO), thereby contributing professional expertise to the development of more climate-resilient societies in some of the hardest-hit countries.

Specifically, we will:

  • strengthen DMI’s international cooperation and its representation of Danish interests in international organisations
  • increase DMI’s engagement in developing countries to strengthen their meteorological capacity for the benefit of the countries concerned and the global community
  • develop collaborations within frameworks such as the United Weather Center (UWC) to strengthen our weather forecasts, warning services and climate research
  • improve the coordination of DMI’s work in international organisations, both internally within DMI and externally, in order to strengthen DMI’s own expertise and support the development of international organisations
