About the Danish Meteorological Institute
At DMI, we serve society by providing meteorological knowledge and data across the Realm of Denmark, the Faroe Islands and Greenland, including the surrounding waters and airspace. Our responsibilities cover weather, climate and the marine environment, ranging from issuing weather forecasts and warnings of hazardous weather to producing ice information for Greenland and developing future climate scenarios for use in climate adaptation in Denmark.
Organization
The Danish Meteorological Institute (DMI) has approximately 350 employees. They work primarily at Sankt Kjelds Gaard in Copenhagen, but also at the air bases in Karup and Skrydstrup, as well as at the weather service in Nuuk, Greenland.
DMI is organised into a number of departments: IT and Observations – Weather Research – Policy, Strategy and Communication – Resources and Risk Management – Weather and Warnings – Data and Digitalisation – National Centre for Climate Research.
Strategy
DMI’s 2024–2028 strategy sets out the key priorities for the institute’s development towards 2028. The goal is a meteorological institute that delivers quality-assured weather data to society, continuously develops data and forecasts using new technologies, and actively advises citizens and society on the impacts of developments in weather, climate and the marine environment.
Research at DMI
DMI has a research and development department with just over 70 researchers and PhD students. DMI’s research is application-oriented. For example, we develop models that can predict weather, climate or the dispersion of substances in the air or at sea. We test and validate how measurements from satellites can best be converted into usable knowledge. We study and map the climate of the future so that present-day Denmark can invest wisely in long-term, resilient infrastructure.

The history of DMI
The Danish Meteorological Institute (DMI) is one of the oldest public institutions in Denmark. The DMI we know today was established in 1990, when the Meteorological Institute, the Aviation Weather Service and the Armed Forces Weather Service were merged. However, the history of DMI began almost 200 years ago.
