The main field of meteorological model systems is methods for weather forecasting. The numerical weather prediction (NWP) system at DMI is called DMI-HIRLAM, where HIRLAM stands for High Resolution Limited Area Model. The research and development include both data assimilation methods and model parameterisation of physical processes as well as utilization of dif-ferent observing systems. The results of DMI-HIRLAM are used in various other models for opera-tional forecasting, including air quality models, a hydrodynamic ocean model for storm surge fore-casting, a wave model and a road condition model.
Research and development in the field of air quality include methods for forecasting atmospheric dispersion, decay and deposition of radioactive material for the Danish nuclear emergency preparedness, methods for smog and ozone forecasting, and pollen forecasting.
