About COI

Our primary function is to forecast ocean conditions for domestic Danish Waters, the Baltic Sea, the North Sea and for the North Atlantic with special focus on Greenland Waters.

Marine forecasts, warnings, observations and advice are among DMI's most widely used services. COI core activities include forecast of waves, sea currents, temperatures, salinity, tides and storm surge warnings for Danish waters.

About COI

   -Research

   -Staff

Most of our work is based on data from satellite observations and from measuring instruments located in harbours or at sea. The ice charts for Greenland's navigable waters are based on satellite images and regular helicopter patrolling of the sea routes in the southwest Greenland.

On the global scale we produce sea surface temperature charts, and we have a special focus on the North Sea and the Baltic Sea, where we also monitor and make projections of drifting sea ice, oil spill and algae distribution.

Communication

The Centre for Ocean and ice disseminates information and knowledge that it accumulates to a wide range of users including shipmasters, preparednesses, planners, decision-makers, scientists, yachtsmen and surfers.

We publish scientific articles in international magazines and technical reports (see DMI reports) and also write in journals such as 'Børsen', 'Søfart' and 'Aktuel Naturvidenskab'.

Centre employees frequently partake in academic and professional meetings and conferences. Here they present their latest results and discuss with fellow researchers and experts.

Consultancy

COI provides commercial consultancy to customers on many sea regions around the world, from Greenland waters and the North Sea - Baltic Sea region to the Caspian Sea and the Yellow Sea.

Our consulatancy is based on the knowledge and experience that we have built through operational charting and forecasting of various ocean parameters.

COI consultancy includes all branches of the marine industry - from shipping and off-shore operations etc. to ice management, environmental considerations and marine climate (consequences, adaptation).
